Samsung might return to Qualcomm’s mobile chip fold with the ‘next Galaxy phone’, the company’s mobile chief has claimed.
The South Korean tech giant famously dropped Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series chips on the latest Galaxy handsets.
Instead, Samsung favoured its own Exynos chipset for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, snubbing the industry trend of opting for Qualcomm’s processing fare.
This might not be the case for the company’s future flagship devices however, as Samsung’s mobile chief J K Shin explains.
Speaking at a media event today, April 9, as reported by Zawya, Shin said: “We have to use the best engines to make our products competitive, which is why we opted to use our own chips.”
He continued: “But we may very well end up using products from Qualcomm again in the next Galaxy phone.”
It’s not clear whether Shin is referring to the Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy Note 5 with his remark, or perhaps another handset altogether. Given the breadth of Samsung’s ‘Galaxy’ line, this could refer to any number of devices.

The mobile boss also talked up the possibility of a shortage for the Galaxy S6 Edge model, with the quirky handset expected to bring in big orders.
“Some carriers are switching existing orders to get more of the S6 Edge, and it looks like demand for the model will exceed supply throughout this year,” explained Shin.
“That means average selling price will fall at a slower rate, which will have a positive impact on Samsung overall.”
Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are due to go on sale tomorrow, April 10, in the UK.
