The maker of the groundbreaking Raspberry Pi microcomputer has announced the credit-card sized device has passed more than five million sales.
The landmark number, confirmed by the Pi Foundation on Tuesday, comes less than three years after the UK-made computer went on sale.
According to company, sales of the low-cost Pi has made it best selling UK computer manufacturer…ever!.
“Just confirmed the big news we’ve all been waiting for: we’ve now sold more than 5 million Raspberry Pis,” the organisation behind the device tweeted.
“We think that this means that in just under 3 years, we’ve gone from zero to being the biggest selling UK computer manufacturer ever. Yowza.”
The foundation says around 3 million of the sales are comprised of the original Model B Raspberry Pi, while 1.5 million Model B+ motherboards are currently existing in the word. The lower-end Model A and Model A+ computers have shipped between 100,000 and 150,000.

Even though it was only announced around two weeks ago, the Pi Foundation estimates it has already sold half-a-million Raspberry Pi 2 models.
The newly released Pi 2 offers a quad-core processor 6x faster than the original, boosts the ram to 1GB and still retains the same, sub-£25 price point.

The idea behind the Raspberry Pi was to provide an affordable solution for schools and encourage coding to return to the curriculum, but the device has proved very popular across the pond too.
Just recently Microsoft announced Pi owners will also be able to run a version of Windows 10 on the device, which will be available freely.
