The Android 5.1 release date is edging near with a HTC executive confirming the software will be given a formal rollout in March.

While the mobile OS update has been the recent subject of multiple leaks, Google has yet to confirm any official Android 5.1 launch plans.

Giving its software supplier a bit of a nudge, however, HTC’s Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, has taken to Twitter to tease the upcoming patch.

Fielding a question on when a bug fix would land, he announced: “It’ll be tied to Google’s next MR [maintenance release], which is in March.”

Although failing to mention Android 5.1 by name, it is believed Versi’s comments relate either to the full blow update or a more incremental Android 5.0.3 patch.

Given Android 5.1 was spotted running on a selection of entry-level Android One handsets in the Philippines earlier this week, we would edge towards the former.

Adding further fuel to an imminent Android 5.1 release, the software has also been spotted powering a developer’s Nexus 5 handset.
