Samsung is preparing to one-up Apple in the tablet stakes with a pair of new slates reportedly thinner than the iPad Air 2.

According to SamMobile sources, the Korean giant will release two Galaxy Tab S2 models in 8.0-inch and 9.7-inch iterations.

The new display sizes reported differ from those featured within the original Galaxy Tab S which arrived in 8.4 and 10.5-inch flavours.

The sizes reported would bring Samsung into direct competition with the Apple iPad models which are available in 7.9- and 9.7-inch sizes.

The Android-powered tablets will benefit from a premium metal frame as Samsung seeks to rival Apple’s flagship in terms of design.

The iPad Air 2 is just 6.1mm thin, so Samsung will have to go some in order to make its models even sleeker, but we’re excited to see what the firm comes up with.

The previous version of the device was among Samsung's best-rated tablets yet, with the 10.5-inch model earning a 9/10 score from TrustedReviews for its ultra-slim design, non-reflective screen, great performance and improved camera.

SamMobile doesn’t say when Samsung will be outing the new Galaxy Tab S2, but it would be a surprise not to see them at the firm’s Unpacked event on the eve of Mobile World Congress next month..

The company is planning on unveiling the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge during the March 1 media event.
