Microsoft has announced it has halted manufacturer or the Surface 2 hybrid device running Windows RT.
The second generation tablet-cum-laptop is biting the dust after the company found discovered a winning formula with the latest Surface 3 Pro device.
Just yesterday, Microsoft announced it had brought in $1.1 billion in revenue from the Surface division in the last three months, based on the success of the latest generation model.
The firm didn’t announce specific figures but it appears the 15-month old Surface 2 was responsible for very little of this success.
In a statement (via The Verge) the company said: "We are no longer manufacturing Surface 2; however, those still eager to buy Surface should visit Microsoft Retail Stores, MicrosoftStore.com, third-party retailers and resellers for the latest availability."
Microsoft has not announced whether the end for the Surface 2 marks the end for the desperately disappointing, touch-focused Windows RT operating system.
With no sign of a device to succeed and no plans to upgrade existing devices to Windows 10, it appears RT is dead and buried.

Microsoft’s earnings report presented the Surface devision in a shining light, with Lumia sales also topping 10 million in a quarter for the first time.
It wasn’t all good news for the Redmond-based company though. Profits were down year on year and despite its chart topping festive-season the company also sold less Xbox consoles than the previous year.
