With the PS4 and Xbox One less than a year old, AMD believes Sony and Microsoft are already looking ahead to the future.
That’s according to the senior VRP and CFO of AMD Devinder Kumar who spoke about life after the eighth generation consoles at a Q&A session at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch technology conference.
Kumar commented that, “The life cycle of the products are probably going to be shorter” adding that, “Our customers are already thinking about what comes next.”
The Xbox 360 was released eight years ago while the PS3 landed seven years ago so both have been around for almost a decade prior to the PS4 and the Xbox One turning up in late 2013.
AMD supplies the Jaguar CPU found inside the PS4 and the Xbox One. It also provides the graphics chip powering the Nintendo Wii U's performance.
This follows comments made by EA Studios EVP Patrick Soderlund to MCV last year ahead of the Xbox One and PS4 launches stating that he expected replacements for the latest consoles to surface much quicker than the seven and eight years it took for the PS3 and Xbox 360 to be superseded.
Soderlund stated that the console cycle for the Xbox 360 and PS3 "may have gone on a little bit longer than I would have wanted.” Soderlund also suggested a five, six year gap before the Xbox One and PS4 successors are a reality.
This is revelation from a key component supplier so early into the cycle of the new consoles comes on the cusp of Sony and Microsoft’s E3 2014 press conferences where we expect to find out what's in store for the two consoles in the near and distant future.
