iPhone 6 sales top 10 million units in opening weekend

iPhone 6 sales are already setting records, with Apple shifting more than 10 million units of its latest smartphone during its opening three days on sale.

With the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 having hit retailers last Friday, September 19, alongside the larger, 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, the staggering opening weekend sales figures cover both new models.

With the figure representing the highest three day sales achieved by any smartphone line to date, Apple has revealed interest in the handsets have “exceeded our expectations”.

Although the manufacturer has failed to split down the ratio of iPhone 6 to iPhone 6 Plus sales, prior to last week’s release, the company confirmed that more than 4 million pre-orders had been placed for the new phones in the first 24 hours of availability.

Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectation for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” Apple CEO, Tim Cook stated.

He added: “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin.”

This immediate success of the iPhone 6 has come at a cost for Apple, however. The device is already in short supply with 3-4 week delivery delays now being placed on all colour schemes and storage capacities of both models.

“While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible,” Cook stated.

The iPhone 6 is Apple’s answer to the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8. The phone pairs a 4.7-inch Retina display with a new A8 processor and improved 8-megapixel iSight camera.

Having launched in 10 territories on day one, including the UK, US and Canada, the iPhone 6 will hit 20 more countries this Friday, September 26. Apple has confirmed the phone will be available in 115 countries by the end of the year.

Three iPhone 6 colours are currently available, with silver and ‘space grey’ models being joined by a gold option.
