iPhone 6 Plus earns ‘best LCD display ever’ nod

The new iPhone 6 Plus handset has the ‘best performing smartphone LCD’ ever, according to exhaustive tests carried out by the DisplayMate site.

The site, which specialises in ranking displays through a series of intensive quality tests reserved high praise for the full HD 5.5-inch LCD sitting within Apple’s new phablet.

Based on our extensive Lab tests and measurements, the iPhone 6 Plus is the best performing smartphone LCD display that we have ever tested,” the site wrote in its ‘shoot-out’

“It delivers uniformly consistent all around Top Tier display performance. The iPhone 6 Plus is only the second smartphone display (LCD or OLED) to ever get all Green (Very Good to Excellent) ratings in all test and measurement categories (except for Brightness variation with Viewing Angle, which is the case for all LCDs) since we started the Display Technology Shoot-Out article series in 2006, an impressive achievement for a display. The iPhone 6 Plus has raised the bar for top LCD display performance up by a notch.”

While the iPhone 6 Plus earned the highest accolade, the 720p Retina Display on the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 wasn’t quite as well received by DisplayMate, who still ranked it as ‘Very Good’ and claimed most consumers would be happy.

The site wrote: “Twice as many pixels to work with [on the iPhone 6 Plus] makes a noticeable visual difference. In addition, even with content at their respective native display resolutions, fine text and graphics look better on the iPhone 6 Plus. The display on the iPhone 6 is none-the-less still a Very Good display, and most buyers will be happy with its performance.”

While the iPhone 6 Plus earned the title of best performing LCD display, it couldn’t top the Super AMOLED screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 .

The recently announced Note 4’s qHD screen ranks best overall, according to the site, due to its colour management technology.
