Microsoft has aimed a cheeky dig at Apple by doubling the amount of free storage on its OneDrive cloud storage service for a limited time.
Apple has come under fire in recent days for the large amount of storage (around 5GB) required to install iOS 8 directly onto an iPhone or iPad. This has led to many users - particularly those of devices with just 16GB of storage - having to make harsh decisions about which photos and apps to uninstall.
As the new iPhone 6 (which of course shouldn't have such a problem, coming with iOS 8 preinstalled) rolled out on Friday, Microsoft posted news of a generous limited-time offer on the OneDrive blog.
The company is doubling the amount of free storage available to new subscribers. Ordinarily you get 15GB of free cloud storage, but now you get 30GB.
Microsoft's line: "We think you’ll appreciate having more free storage while setting up your iPhone 6 or upgrading to iOS 8."
You'll have to sign up AND activate OneDrive's auto photo-upload feature in order to claim your 30GB of cloud storage. "For those getting ready to install iOS 8, this means you won’t have to delete a bunch of photos or apps to make room for the upgrade," Microsoft helpfully points out.
Of course, this offer is also available to those Android, Windows Phone, and Windows users who activate the auto-upload feature.
Hurry, though - this offer only extends to the end of September. Anyone signing up or activating auto-upload from October onwards will be back to 15GB.
