iPhone 6 shown to be water resistant

A recent test of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have shown them to be far more resistant of water damage than previous models.

Various drop tests have shown that the new, larger iPhone 6 is generally quite tough. However, with many Android rivals like the Samsung Galaxy S5 achieving an IP67 rating - meaning they're pretty much dust and water proof - "quite tough" doesn't seem like much of a boast.

While Apple doesn't make any such claims of hardiness about the iPhone 6, however, the phone may well be better sealed up than many were expecting.

Warranty service provider SquareTrade has released a video of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus being put through various torture tests. One of those involves the handsets being submerged in water for 10 seconds whilst playing a music video.

Surprisingly, both handsets come out of the experience unscathed. The sound cuts out for a brief period, but is quickly restored minutes after being removed from their bath.

This tallies with early iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus strip-down reports that have discovered new internal rubber gaskets around the power and volume keys. This is clearly an attempt on Apple's part to make its latest smartphones more dust and water resistant, and it seems to have paid off.

Elsewhere in the video, the iPhone 6 wins extra points for surviving six four foot drops without any major damage. The iPhone 6 Plus didn't fare quite as well, with the (intact) front panel coming away from the body.
