The UK’s leading 4G network EE has revealed plans to begin testing CAT 10 LTE networks, which could eventually offer blisteringly fast download speeds of up to 450Mbps.
Speaking to TechRadar, an EE spokesperson said tests on the enhanced mobile data tech will start in the middle of 2015.
The CAT 10 tech, which also promises to offer 150Mbps uploads, is theoretically able to achieve such speeds by aggregating three different mobile carriers.
For context, EE currently offers 150Mbps CAT 6 speeds to its 4G Plus customers, which is capable of one day providing 300Mbps downloads.
The firm is also working on rolling out a CAT 9 network (which can also offer 450Mbps download speeds) at Wembley Stadium.
The spokesperson said: “We'll be demonstrating CAT 9 on our network at Wembley Stadium in the next couple of months, and CAT 10 will be next – we're intending to test in mid-2015.
"We're staying at the forefront of chipset developments so that we can keep getting the best out of our network and keep delivering the world's fastest 4G speeds for our customers."
The news comes on the same day it emerged Samsung may be working on an Exynos chipset which would enable CAT 10 LTE, which could even sit within the forthcoming Galaxy S6 handset. Last month Qualcomm also unveiled its CAT 10 Gobi 9x45 modem.
EE said it is confident of being the first network in the UK to offer the Cat 10 speeds to consumers, but that’s likely to be a while away yet. It says other networks may struggle because of the necessity to hold 4G spectrum on multiple bands.
