Vimeo now offering 4K downloads

Video sharing service Vimeo is now giving users the opportunity to download clips at a 4K resolution.

The new policy allows Vimeo Pro users to make their content available at the higher resolution format, which can be made available for anyone to download or through the paid Vimeo On Demand arm.

Although the downloads are now available Vimeo isn’t offering streaming just yet, with the company telling Gigaom, it’s “a little early” to offer it.

Vimeo’s upgrade will be a great boost for the Vimeo community, many of whom are independent filmmakers and video artists rocking the Red 4K cameras.

Previously, content creators had been able to upload in 4K, but Vimeo had been downscaling them to a lower resolution. Not anymore.

Those hoping to view the content will, of course, require a 4K-capable monitor such as the Apple iMac with 5K Reina Display. According to the Vimeo CTO Andrew Pile “The new iMac is going to be a turning point,” for 4K video adoption.

Vimeo is joining video companies like Amazon and Netflix in offering 4K video to customers.
