Amazon has just announced that its streaming service – Prime Instant Video – now offers 4K video content.
There’s a limited selection of content for now, but it’s assured the proffered UHD content will expand beyond its current roster.
Included in the initial offering of TV are Alpha House, Orphan Black, Transparent, Hand of God, and Red Oaks.
Sony Pictures has also contributed to the 4K pool with its own movies, which include American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Elysium, This is the End, and Godzilla.
The move ranks Amazon alongside Netflix, YouTube, and M-Go in offering UHD video content over an internet connection.
The 4K content is – as far as we’re aware – only available in the US for now, although it seems a likely candidate for a wider rollout across locations that already have access to Prime Instant Video, like the United Kingdom.
To buy a 4K movie through Amazon Instant Video, you’re looking at a $19.99 surcharge, which translates to £12.76 sterling.
Ultra HD resolution is currently the highest quality commercially streamed video standard, with footage touting a resolution of 3840 x 2160.
Of course, you’ll need a smart TV that both has access to the Amazon Prime Instant Video app and can support 4K resolution video display too.
