PS4 and PS Vita
Sony has confirmed that it will start selling its PS4 console in China in January.
The company announced on its website that the PS4 console will hit shops in China from January 11, 2015. That will be almost exactly a year after China lifted its ban on foreign games consoles.
In addition to the PS4, Sony will also make its PS Vita handheld console available in China from this date. Perhaps Chinese gamers will give Sony's cruelly ignored portable the love that it deserves.
All good hardware requires software support, of course, and Sony has also revealed that more than 70 third party developers and publishers are lined up to supply the Chinese market with PS4 and PS Vita games. It also name checked some of the Chinese developers that will contribute.
Sony has also announced that it will be launching a "robust after-sales service" in China to accompany the hardware roll-out.
"PS4 is expanding at the fastest rate in PlayStation hardware history," said Sony Computer Entertainment's Andrew House. "We are delighted that we are able to fully launch our business in China, which is a market with great potential."
It's more good news for the PlayStation brand as it celebrates its twentieth birthday. The prospect of entering the world's biggest economy is particularly good news for Sony as a whole, as it has become increasingly reliant on its games arm amidst disappointing financial performance elsewhere in the company.
