Google replacing accidentally damaged Nexus 5 phones

Google appears to have kicked off a deal in which it replaces any damaged Nexus 5 - no matter how the damage was sustained.

Reports are popping up that Google Nexus 5 owners have been able to secure free refurbished replacements for their broken handsets, even when the damage was accidental.

Naturally, there are some caveats here. For one thing, you have to have obtained the Nexus 5 in question directly through the Google Play Store. Secondly, this is a one-time offer, so you can't go wrecking handsets without a care in the world.

Most importantly, though - and this will be the kicker for most of our Nexus 5-owning readers - you have to be in the US. This deal doesn't seem to apply outside of Google's home country. Bummer.

If you meet all of these conditions, though, it's an incredibly generous offer. Cracked your screen? Dropped your phone in the toilet? Done any of the stupid things we all do and usually have to claim back on insurance or pay for out of our own pockets? Then Google has you covered.

As reported by Droid-life, all American customers need do is contact Google Play customer services and arrange to send back the broken handset. Google will take payment for the replacement from your credit card, but will refund it once the broken handset arrives.

There's a good chance Google is attempting to clear out existing Nexus 5 stock ahead of the arrival of its replacement. The Nexus 5 was announced at the end of October of last year, so we're probably less than two months away from seeing the Nexus 6.
