US gamers can double down when they buy a bundle next week

Microsoft is pulling out all of the stops in its bid to reel in the PS4’s lead in the next-gen wars by offering US shoppers a free game of their choosing with Xbox One console purchases.

From September 7 to September 13 next week, shoppers who fork out for an Xbox One bundle with Kinect and either Madden 15 or Forza 5, will be able to pick out any additional game, free of charge.

The deal entitles games to add Call of Duty Ghosts, Watch Dogs, Diablo III, Titanfall and even the new Destiny first person shooter to their bundle.

The deal will be available from participating US retailers only and there’s no word on whether Microsoft is plotting a similar scheme in the UK.

“If you haven’t yet made the jump to the new generation of gaming, then head to your favorite retailer next week and pick up an Xbox One. For one week only – from September 7 through September 13 – when you buy an Xbox One from participating retailers in the U.S., you’ll get a free Xbox One game of your choice,” Microsoft wrote on its Xbox Wire blog.

Forza 5 will be free to play for Xbox One owners around the world this weekend.">The announcement comes following the news that Forza 5 will be free to play for Xbox One owners around the world this weekend.

In a deal available only to Xbox Gold Live subscribers, gamers will be access the full game for the duration of the weekend and all achievements will remain unlocked if they decide to splash out on the title once the free period has expired.

Microsoft has used the tactic before, with its Max: The Curse of the Brotherhood game as it seeks to ensnare gamers reluctant to part with money for often-expensive digital titles.

Will Microsoft’s latest efforts help it overcome the Sony PS4? Or it Sony’s battle to lose now? Which side of the fence are you on? Let us know in the comments.
