The Motorola Moto G has been officially announced – it’s a low-cost 4.5-inch phone with a 720p screen and a quad-core processor.
Due to go on sale tomorrow, 14 November, for an expected £159.99 (16GB), the Motorola Moto G is one of the highest-spec phones at the price and a clear rival for the pre-pay audience that might be eyeing up the Nexus 5.
Motorola Moto G Specs
Other than a 720p 4.5-inch screen, other notable features of the Moto G include a quad-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor and a minimum 8GB of internal memory. Many lower-cost Androids only offer 4GB of storage, which can cause problems when trying to install data-hungry apps.
Parts of the Motorola Moto G that are slightly cut-down include the 5-megapixel camera and 1GB of RAM, where the Nexus 4 had 2GB of RAM. It also lacks 4G, although the fairly fast HSPA-plus 3G connectivity is likely to satisfy most budget buyers.
The Motorola Moto G runs Android 4.3, just one step behind the Android 4.4 software that made its debut in the Google Nexus 5. Motorola has confirmed that a 4.4 update is planned, though.
A phone that’s effectively a cut-down version of the Motorola Moto X, the Moto G is closely comparable to the Nexus 4, a very popular mobile that was recently discontinued by Google. However, this is an all-plastic phone, aside from the Gorilla Glass that tops off its screen. It does have a water resistant coating designed to protect it from light splashes, though.
The Motorola Moto G comes in array of colours, including white, black, green, pink and blue. And it has a 2,070 mAh battery,
Motorola Moto G Positioning
This is the first new European phone to be designed by Motorola since it was bought by Google in 2012. Motorola announced the Moto X earlier this year, but it was not sold in the UK.
Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside says the Moto G is out to solve the issues of other budget phones as, which he calls "really, really bad". During the phone's launch, he singled out the rival Samsung Galaxy Fame as a phone with a poor screen and a "weak processor".
The Motorola Moto G costs £159.99 in its 16GB form, and the 8GB edition is around £130.
