Motorola has confirmed that the Moto X will get an update to Android 4.4 KitKat imminently, and the Moto G by January.
Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside has said that the Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Motorola Moto X will be available “within a matter of weeks”, making it one of the first phones to get the latest version of the Android OS. The lower-cost Motorola Moto G is also to get the update by the end of January.
Motorola’s Moto G will be the cheapest 720p phone available from a major phone maker, selling at a similar price to the last Nexus 4s, which were sold in ‘fire sale’ fashion. The cut-price Nexus 4 sold out extremely quickly.
The Motorola Moto X is not widely available in the UK, but can be bought from a select few retailers that have imported the device.
The Moto X phone has a 4.7-inch 720p screen, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and a 10-megapixel camera. At £500, it’s a direct rival to high-end phones like the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z1. The Moto G is an impressive budget phone, whose 16GB edition costs around £160 SIM-free.
Released earlier this year, the Moto X was the first phone to be designed by Motorola since the company was bought by Google in 2012. Similarly, the Moto G is the first phone to come to Europe from Motorola since the buyout.
It is clearly an aggressive move designed to compete directly with big rivals like Samsung, which offer much lower-spec devices at the same price.
Moto X and Moto G owners should be alerted once the Android 4.4 KitKat update is available, but you can also check manually for the update within the phones’ Settings menus.
Android 4.4 KitKat’s key updates include a reworked interface and the inclusion of Quickoffice, Google’s own Microsoft Office-style app.
