Google’s stranglehold on the smartphone scene has hit new heights with the Android operating system now powering four out of five smartphones.
With Android now powering most leading smartphones, including the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and LG G2, latest figures gathered by Garnet Research have revealed the Google OS now has an 81.9 per cent dominant stake of the smartphone OS market.
Up almost 10 per cent year-on-year, the Q3 2013 figures show a massive 12 month increase over the company’s 72.6 market share during the same three month period last year.
While Android has grown its share of the smartphone OS scene, Apple has seen its iOS platform drop more than 2 per cent to a 12.1 per cent share that is still good enough for second.
Although Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has seen a 123 per cent year-on-year growth to a 3.6 per cent market share, ailing Canadian manufacturer BlackBerry has seen its control of the smartphone scene plummet over the past year from 5.2 to 1.8 per cent market share.
With Android 4.4 having just been introduced aboard the already hugely popular Google Nexus 5 handset, the Google platform shows no sign of surrendering its sizeable market lead.
According to the analyst’s figures, 40 per cent of all Android handsets are currently sold in China.
