Ouya has only just made it to market but the Android powered gamer could soon face stiff competition as Google is rumoured to be working on its own console offering.
According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, Google is working on a range of new hardware offerings, with an Android powered games console reportedly set to hit the market in the near future alongside a raft of other Android themed offerings.
With the start-up company behind the Ouya console finally seeing its Android brimmed casual gaming device hitting retailers earlier this week, supposed “people familiar with the matter,” have reportedly suggested Google will launch its own games console alongside a second-generation iteration of the now defunct Nexus Q media streamer.
With Google also reportedly looking to enter the smartwatch market, the industry insiders have claimed the search turn hardware giant is looking to stave off potential threats from rival manufacturers.
“With the game machine and digital watch, Google is hoping to combat similar devices that Apple Inc. may release in the future, according to the people,” the WSJ reports stated. They insiders added: “The Internet giant hopes to design and market the devices itself and release at least one of them this fall.”
While Google has failed to comment on the latest reports “the people briefed on the matter said Google is reacting in part to expectations that rival Apple will launch a videogame console as part of its next Apple TV product release.”
Although Google could enter the games console market later this year, it is unlikely that the Android powered device will trouble the upcoming Xbox One and PS4.
With dedicated consoles having been rocked in recent years by the rise of mobile and app-based gaming, any Google Android console will likely benefit from cheaper gaming prices but struggle with attracting AAA titles like their traditional counterparts.
