With the Samsung Galaxy line having risen to prominence on the smartphone scene, recent patent filings have suggested the company’s upcoming smartwatch could launch a new product line in Samsung Gear.

While a questionable choice in our eyes, the Samsung Gear branding has appeared in a selection of patent and trademark filings, suggesting the Gear range could feature a number of accessories and wearables which support the Korean manufacturer’s other product lines.

Although original Samsung Gear trademark filings suggested the name could be applied to all manner of products, more recent refinements of the Gear branding have seen Samsung make reference to “watches, clocks, wristbands and bracelets.”

Offering further insight into what consumers can expected from the Samsung Gear smartwatch, the manufacturer’s filings referred to the range as a collection of "watches that communicate data to personal digital assistants, smart phones, tablet PCs, PDA, and personal computers through internet websites and other computer and electronic communications networks; watchbands that communicate data to [the same aforementioned devices]."

Long known to be working on its own smartwatch, Samsung confirmed its plans back in March to launch its own wrist-worn gadget. The manufacturer’s actions could be seen as a premptive move to counteract the much mooted Apple iWatch reportedly in the works in Cupertino

"We've been preparing the watch product for so long," Samsung's executive VP Lee Young Hee said in an interview earlier this year. He added: "We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."

Earlier this week Apple iWatch rumours kicked into overdrive as it emerged the iPad mini maker has trademarked the iWatch name in a number of countries including Japan, Russia, Mexico and Taiwan.
