WhatsApp has now been installed over one billion times through the Google Play store on Android.
That makes it the second-ever non-Google mobile app to manage the feat, with Facebook having already bagged the accolade last year.
This is great news for Facebook, of course, with the company having only bought out WhatsApp little over a year ago.
This means Facebook now has two applications each boasting one billion installations respectively.
This latest success isn’t exactly surprising – back in January, we learned that WhatsApp saw some 700 million users engage with the app on a monthly basis on both iOS and Android.
What’s more, 70 per cent of those were daily users, highlighting the messenger app’s far-reaching uptake.

It’s worth noting that there are some caveats to this figure, foremost amongst which is the fact that the number doesn’t take into account uninstalls.
This means it’s almost assured that one billion Android devices don’t actually have WhatsApp installed at present.
On the other hand, these figures don’t even take into account iOS installations, which means the cross-platform installation total is likely far higher than this latest tally.
Aside from Facebook and WhatsApp, there are a number of other Google-stamped apps that have broken through the one billion barrier. That roster includes Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube.
