Best Apple Watch Apps to download first

Rumour has it that there could be around 100,000 Apple Watch apps in the App Store by the time the smartwatch becomes commercially available. That means the ecosystem could be bigger than Android Wear from day one.

However, what will these be? We’ve rounded up some of the apps you’ll definitely be able to use on the Apple Watch. We'll keep updating this list when we gather more information.

Twitter

Twitter

Everyone's favourite micro-blogging site will now be available on a micro screen, so you can keep up with the latest trends (and have a good rant) quicker than ever. You can now also compose tweets using dictation.

WeChat

The free messaging and calling app will also be immediately available on Apple Watch. You'll be able to reply to friends and family with messages or stickers. We're hoping WhatsApp's on its way too.

Nike%2B Running

Apple is banking heavily on the smartwatch’s health and fitness credentials appealing to consumers, so it’s no surprise to see that the Nike%2B Running app already exists on the new platform. The Apple Watch will display your distance, duration and pace, but you’ll unfortunately also need to take your iPhone with you. Runtastic will work in a similar way.

Apple Pay

One of the Apple Watch's standout features. Holding your Apple Watch close to a payment terminal will be all you need to do to buy a product. A beeping sound and haptic feedback will confirm the payment is successful, though there's still no word on when the service will make its way to the UK.

uber

Uber

Taxis will be even easier to summon, thanks to the inclusion of the controversial Uber app. You'll be able to request a cab, get a picture of your car and driver information right on your wrist. Paying with a slick flourish of your wrist sounds like a suitably slick conclusion to any journey.

American Airlines

Apple reckons the American Airlines app on your wrist will help streamline your airport experience. You'll be able to board a plane simply by flashing the Apple Watch, which can store things like boarding passes, so you won't need to worry about losing any flimsy paper documents. Expedia does pretty much the same things.

SPG

If you fancy avoiding the queues at the front desk of your hotel, the Apple Watch will be your saviour. The company has confirmed it will be available for use in W Hotels, but plenty more hospitality firms are likely to want a piece of the action too.

Shazam

Trusty music-recognition app Shazam will also be making it to your arm, doing what it does best with minimal fuss.

Instagram

Instagram

The immensely popular photo-sharing site is another headline app, despite the fact the Apple Watch doesn't pack its own camera hardware. The digital crown will be central to navigation, requiring it to scroll through images, while tapping will allow you to see more information and likes. You can even comment and receive notifications on the watch.

Citymapper

Geographically-challenged consumers will be pleased to hear that Citymapper is coming to the Apple Watch. The app how to get around the city, fastest routes, journey prices and the number of calories you’ll burn. Very, very handy.

Alarm.com

Perhaps the most interesting demonstration at Apple's event, the Alarm.com app (which, incidentally, currently has a very poor rating in the App Store) will allow users to monitor and control their home security systems, including locks and garage doors.

Evernote

Now you can be productive… on your watch. Productivity app Evernote is a mainstay on smartphones and computers everywhere, but it’ll soon be available on the Apple Watch. Dictation and reminders will be the most useful features.
