Samsung sold more smartwatches than anyone else last year

Samsung claimed top spot in last year’s race to smartwatch glory, selling more wearable units than any other manufacturer.

The South Korean tech giant managed to sell around 1.2 million smartwatches during 2014, far more than any of its rivals.

This is according to new research by analytics firm Statista, which revealed the top 10 smartwatch manufactuers by unit sales in 2014.

Samsung’s victory isn’t exactly surprising – the company’s fleshed-out wearables roster currently consists of six different smartwatch SKUs.

Second place went to Pebble, with the start-up boasting a formidable 700,000 units sold. That’s impressive considering Pebble doesn’t have nearly the same branding power or marketing money as Samsung.

Fitness-focused Fitbit came third with 600,000 units, followed closely by Sony with 550,000.

Lenovo, LG, and Garmin were next in line, selling 500,000, 420,000, and 400,000 respectively.

After that, units sold dropped off significantly – no other brand sold even half of Garmin’s total.

Withings was the next biggest, although it only managed to flog some 170,000 units, followed by Polar with 150,000.

Finally, in tenth spot, was Asus, which sold a mere 120,000 units of its seemingly snubbed ZenWatch.

Of course, it’s likely 2015 will see a very different sales picture painted. We’re expecting hugely different figures after the market is disrupted by next month’s Apple Watch launch.

Word on the grapevine is that Apple has ordered a staggering 3 million units for its initial sales run alone, which nearly triples Samsung’s total sales for last year.
