Sky is to make sure you’ll never miss the start of a movie again, with Sky Restart to hit the UK later this year.

A service already offered by the company’s continental counterpart, Sky Italia, Sky Restart lets you skip back to the start of a Sky Movies broadcast film, irrespective of when you join the action.

The exact ins-and-outs of how Sky Restart will work following its UK introduction are still unclear, although you Sky box will need to be connected to the internet.

“One of the most popular features among our Italian customers is called ‘Restart’. It’s a simple but very clever idea that allows customers to go back to the start of a movie,” Sky’s CEO, Jeremy Darroch, said in a speech at the Media and Telecoms conference today.

Looking ahead to the service’s UK introduction he added: “We’ll bring it to the UK later this year – just one easy example of sharing best practice across the group.

Exclusively available across Sky’s movie portfolio in Italy, it is expected the UK’s take on Sky Restart will follow in a similar vein.

There is currently no word on when, or indeed if, similar technologies could be introduced to live TV broadcasts moving forward.

With Darroch failing to offer a detailed timeframe for when to expect the service’s UK introduction, we reached out to Sky’s media team for clarification.

Sticking with the vague launch window, we were told there are currently “no firm timings beyond later this year”.
