Apple will announce its new TV service this autumn, according to a new report, but it won't be quite as extensive as hoped.

The new slimmed-down service will apparently have around 25 channels, and will be available across all Apple devices, including the Apple TV.

According to The Wall Street Journal (as relayed by The Verge), these channels will include the likes of ABC, CBS, and Fox, and it could also incorporate ESPN and FX. At least, that will be the case in the service's initial US guise.

Apparently, though, Apple's talks with US network behemoth Comcast have broken down, with one source claiming that Apple had come to the conclusion that Comcast was "stringing it along" while it developed its own web TV device. This means that there will be no NBCUniversal shows on Apple's new TV offering.

Apple is also said to be keen to offer a large on-demand library as part of its service.

Last week Apple announced that it had won the exclusive availability of HBO Now on its own devices. It also announced a price drop for the ageing Apple TV streaming device, from £99 down to £59.

Clearly the next phase of Apple's grand TV plan is about to commence - albeit rather slower than anticipated and with plenty of compromise along the way.
