Samsung has announced a new 128GB storage solution designed specifically for mid-range smartphones.
The new flash module is based on speedy 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 storage, and is being described as ‘value-focused’.
It’s important to note that Samsung’s already shipping its flagship handsets with 128GB memory based on next-gen UFS 2.0 and eMMC 5.1 technology.
This is different, however, and will appear in ‘mid-market smartphones’, offering large, quick storage modules, albeit not as nippy as the Galaxy S6’s storage.
Dr Jung-Bae Lee, Senior Vice President of Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team at Samsung, expects the new storage module to take the industry by storm.
“With the introduction of our value-focused, 3-bit NAND-based eMMC 5.0 line-up, we expect to take the lead in the expansion of high-density mobile storage,” said Lee.
“We are continuing to enhance our next-generation embedded mobile memory offerings with improved performance and higher densities to meet increasing customer demand across the mobile industry.”

The new 128GB storage can manage read speeds of up to 260MB/s, which is impressive for such large built-in mobile memory.
It also boasts 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) for random data read operations, and 5,000 IOPS for random write operations.
That’s a jargon-heavy description, but it basically means devices using the new storage will have no trouble processing high-definition video and handling advanced multi-tasking features.
For contrast, these IOPS speeds are around four and 10 times faster, respectively, that you get from a standard external microSD card.
Samsung also confirmed it was working on quicker and more dense storage solutions, although it didn’t offer a timeline as to when we’d see results.
It’s also worth noting that we don’t yet know when the new 128GB storage will roll out to consumer devices, but the confirmation that it exists means we’ll probably see it quite soon.
