Google is apparently planning to launch a "buy" button to enable you to purchase merchandise online from some of its retailers.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is planning to introduce a "buy" button that would let shoppers search for products and purchase them direct from the search results page. It's a similar concept to Amazon's "one-click ordering" system.

The idea appears to be to keep traffic on Google's own home page rather than sending them away to retail websites following a Google product search.

Google won't follow Amazon's lead in establishing vast warehouses of goods though. This would simply be a front end for selling goods from third party retailers.

One decidedly Amazon-like aspect that Google is said to be adopting, though, is an Amazon Prime-like plan. This would see partner retailers offering free two-day shipping in return for an annual subscription fee.

These plans are said to be in the preliminary discussion stage at present, and there's no guarantee that anything will come of them. Indeed, the report claims that some retailers who have discussed the plans with Google are cool on the idea.

Apparently, they fear the added price competition that such a service would encourage, and don't want to lose control of how their products are presented to customers.
