HP is reportedly planning to launch an ultra-affordable Windows 8.1 laptop known as the Stream 14, in order to assist Microsoft in the battle against Google’s increasingly-popular Chromebooks.
German site MobileGeeks claims the computing giant plans will launch the 14-inch Stream 14 for just $199 (around £120).
The report claims the device will come backing a 1366 x 768 resolution display, while previous leaks have hinted at a AMD processor, 32GB/64GB of built-in storage (expandable through an SD card) and 2GB of RAM.
The specs are very similar to HP’s Chromebook 14 , which has proved one of the the more popular notebooks to run Google’s cloud-based Chrome OS.
The minimal storage rumoured on the Stream 14 would give users enough space to install Windows 8.1, but would then require users to access web-based versions of software like Microsoft Office through the Office 365 subscription platform.
It would also rely heavily on Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage solution in order for users to save documents, photos, video files, etc.
The information acquired by Mobile Geeks claims Microsoft will offer 100GB of OneDrive storage for two years with every purchase of the Steam 14. That matches what’s on offer from Google Drive with every Chromebook.
The leak comes shortly after Microsoft promised the arrival of a host of super-low cost Windows 8.1 laptops. Might we see the Stream 14 at next month’s IFA tech show in Berlin?
