Sony readying perfume bottle-shaped selfie camera

Sony appears to be preparing to launch an unusual selfie-focused camera with a unique perfume bottle design.

The company has teased a new fashion-led camera product on its Chinese Cyber-Shot website. It appears to show a crystal lid of some kind top mounted on a more traditional-looking body.

Further illumination can be found from slightly less official sources. Leaked grainy snaps on Chinese social network Weibo reveal the extent of this garish camera design.

As you can see from the main image, the body of the camera looks more like a Sony smartphone than a Cyber-Shot camera. But the lens is something else entirely. The flip-side of this gem-like structure shows it to be a large lens, flash, and image sensor, which can be swivelled around 360 degrees.

This is clearly aimed at the selfie crowd who want full quality images of themselves and their buddies.

Another image over on Digi-wo (see below) shows just which group Sony appears to be targeting here. That's right - ladies. How terribly enlightened of them.

Sony, of course, has already shown considerable interest in boosting selfie quality with the recently announced Sony Xperia C3, with its 5-megapixel front-facing camera and accompanying flash.

There are no additional details on this new camera's specs, but we're guessing they're going to be several steps ahead of your average front-facing smartphone camera.

We'll find out the full extent of Sony's dubious plans on August 22, which is when the company hints that it will be unveiling the device to the public.
