Pebble could get an infusion of webOS
Pebble, the start-up behind the popular smart watch, has announced it’ll be joined by two of the designers responsible for perfecting the webOS interface.
Engadget reports Itai Vonshak and Liron Damir have joined forces with Pebble, leaving behind life at LG, where they’d been working on rebooting the operating system for LG’s new range of Smart TVs.
Now Vonshak will be in charge of pioneering the user experience on Pebble devices and Damir will take on the role of as head of design.
What this means for tech fans is the prospect of a much-changed look and feel for the next generation of Pebble wearables.
The start-up launched the Pebble Smartwatch last year following a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign , which in essence began the craze for smart watches, now so prominent in 2014.
The Pebble watch has proved popular, but its minimalistic user interface and functionality is less able to compete with some of the Android Wear devices hitting the market, not to mention Apple’s forthcoming iWatch.
webOS has bounced around various tech manufacturers since impressing aboard the ill-fated Palm Pre in 2009.
After the Palm flop, the company was bought up by HP, which tried and failed to give the OS a rebirth on the equally poorly received HP TouchPad tablet.
After a brief period in open source, the OS was purchased by LG to pioneer a new range of Smart TVs away from its failed experiment with Google TV.
The first of those televisions were unveiled at CES in 2014 and form around 70 per cent of LG Smart TVs going forward.
