3D might not be the in-home success many had predicted it would become, but the extra-dimensional tech is still drawing the crowds to the big screen.
Now, social cinema service OurScreen has confirmed it hopes to bring on-demand 3D films to a cinema near year in the not too distant future.
For those of you not familiar with the fledgling service, OurScreen is a digital-social platform which allows movie lovers and local community groups to create screenings at their local cinemas.
Having selected a film of choice, desired cinema and ideal screening time, if your proposed movie showing generates enough interest and ticket sales, the cinema will put it on.
Although currently lacking any 3D content, speaking with TrustedReviews, OurScreen co-founder Ian Cartwright has confirmed 3D flicks will be part of the company’s future.
“At present 3D is not available but it is something we are aware of and as the model rolls out, that is definitely something we will be covering,” he told us. “Films like Gravity and Avatar are these amazing big screen films so yes, 3D will be added to the service but it is missing at present.”
One of the main reasons for this lack of 3D content is infrastructure – the need for specialist equipment and available screen time makes it a more complicated proposition.
“We are working with the industry to be as undisruptive as possible,” Cartwright said. “At the minute we are given cinema slots and if we don’t have a 3D stipulation that means there are more slots available to us.”
Despite planning to add a mass of 3D content to its already bulging film collection, Cartwright has admitted OurScreen has been far from inundated with requests for 3D content.
“We’ve not a huge amount of requests for 3D yet,” he told us. “We have had a few requests in for certain films like Gravity and Avatar, but I wouldn’t say 3D requests have been a massive trend that we’ve seen.”
He added: “I would expect that when we put them on the site, we will make more of it and will have a 3D films special page branded as its own entity could be interesting to explore as well.”
OurScreen has yet to put a timeframe on its 3D plans, although the platform is expanding at a rapid rate. Currently available in 13 UK cities – including London, Liverpool, Oxford, Edinburgh and York, the service will be introduced to new markets moving forward.
