5.5-inch iPhone 6 rear shell image leaks

Newly leaked images appear to show the rear shell of the larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

We've seen pretty much everything there is to see of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, but we've seen precious little of the larger 5.5-inch model up to now. That seems to reflect reports that the larger model has entered production later than the smaller one, and will perhaps be released further along the line.

Now, though, we have one of the first solid component leaks. Or at least, it looks that way.

The part pictured above, as provided by the snappily titled Evasi0nJailbreak.com, appears to show the rear cover of the larger iPhone 6. We know that because it's pictured alongside the equivalent component from the 4.7-inch model.

The report claims that this component has been obtained from "deep within Apple’s supply chain in China," and that it could simply be a prototype for testing purposes.

Still, the design appears to fit with previous leaks for the smaller iPhone 6 model, confirming that Apple is sticking with a uniform design across the range.

As MacRumours points out, the screw holes in this component appear to match up with those on a previously leaked logic board, which adds further credibility to this snap.

Besides a larger display, some rumours have suggested that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will be the only one to feature a sapphire screen, making it much tougher and more scratch-resistant than its 4.7-inch sibling. It's also expected to have a larger 2915mAh battery, with the 4.7-inch model set to feature an 1810mAh model.

The only question now is whether both models will hit shops simultaneously. We should know more come September 9, when Apple is widely expected to be holding a launch event.
