Sony Xperia Z2 Compact reportedly leaks under Xperia A2 branding

The Sony Xperia Z2 has only been with retailers a matter of weeks but attention has already turned to the spinoff Sony Xperia Z2 Compact.

Widely expected to land as a smaller sibling to the Samsung Galaxy S5 rivalling flagship, the Xperia Z2 Compact has reportedly leaked courtesy of a Japanese sales brochure.

However, hinting at a potential change in naming conventions, the phone has been teased under the revised heading of the Sony Xperia A2.

Despite the sighting of the unconfirmed Xperia A2, much confusion is currently surrounding the phone, with the handset listed alongside a set of specs identical to that of the existing Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

The phone has been said to run a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage alongside a 4.3-inch display with a 1280 x 720p resolution.

Although an impressive array of internals in their own right, this would see the mooted Z2 Compact offer no progression over its predecessor.

What’s more, it would put the phone at a serious disadvantage to the 5.2-inch flagship Z2, a phone which packs a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor alongside 3GB of RAM.

While we must stress that these leaks be taken with a strong dose of scepticism, it has been suggested that the A2 could feature a heavily reduced price point, with the listing pointing to a 9.6mm thick handset with a plastic backed design as opposed to the glass of the Z1 Compact.

We will keep our ear to the ground for more on the Z2 Compact/A2 so stay tuned for all the latest.
