Call of Duty 2014 Blacksmith announcement due in May

The 2014 Call of Duty game will be announced in May according to a new report.

Activision is expected to officially launch the next instalment in the Call of Duty series next month, according to a new report from PSU.

Apparently the game is in development under the codename ‘Blacksmith’, but whether that will be related to the game’s official title is currently unknown.

If Activision does launch the first Sledgehammer Games developed COD game next month, this would be around the same time as the Call of Duty Ghosts announcement last year, which gives this latest report a little more weight.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
was developed by Infinity Ward with a little help from Sledgehammer games, but this title will be entirely developed by the latter.

According to a leak from an industry insider and a mention in one developer’s LinkedIn profile, the game is looking more likely to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 than a new Call of Duty title.

Earlier this month the first Call of Duty 2014 Blacksmith screenshot emerged, showing off a highly detailed character.

The next Call of Duty game will mark the start of a new three-year development cycle between Sledgehammer, Infinity Ward and Treyarch.

It will also be the first COD title to be built for next-gen PS4 and Xbox One consoles first, with current-gen editions as secondary development aims.

“Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process,” said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

If the game is announced next month, don’t expect it to launch until Q4 2014 as is the usual COD release cycle, but Activision will no doubt give us loads more details at E3 in June.
