Sony has revealed the PlayStation Now service could negate the need to buy a console altogether.
Speaking to TrustedReviews, PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara let slip that PlayStation Now could offer high-end titles to gamers who do not own a console.
“I’m excited about the launch of PlayStation Now in the US in the summer. That brings a higher tier of gaming than app gaming into the market at some different and flexible pricing models and certainly without the need to purchase a console, or the absolute necessity to purchase a console”, said Gara. “That may be somewhere where PlayStation can take the market and take the market.”
PlayStation Now was announced in January at CES 2014 and will allow access to PlayStation games outside of console boundaries.
Initially, it will only be available on the PS4 and PS3, but PS Vita and, more interestingly, 2014 Sony Bravia TV models will be added soon after.
“Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices,” said Sony when launching PlayStation Now.
This means in the future you could access PlayStation titles ranging from the original PSOne right up to the PS4 on other devices beyond consoles.
All you’d need is a Sony Entertainment Network account and a compatible device to get access, meaning technically you wouldn’t need a console whatsoever.
“We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.”
Sony also teased that the PlayStation Now UK release date may not be “a millions miles away”.
