Apple CEO Tim Cook teases “new product categories” to launch in 2014

Apple CEO Tim Cook has teased that we can expect some new product categories from Apple this year.

Following a report published earlier this week, Cook said the company is working on devices that a “reasonable” person would consider new product categories.

Of course, Cook gave very little away in his statement apart from that the company is working on some new products, which may well include the heavily rumoured Apple iWatch and the Apple iTV.

“There will be new categories”, said Cook in an interview with the WSJ. “We’re not ready to talk about it, but we’re working on some really great stuff.”

When pressed further about the new products, Cook didn’t elaborate but said that any “reasonable” person would consider them new product lines for Apple’s portfolio.

One thing Cook did specifically highlight during the interview was Apple’s choice to provide quality over quantity, especially following backlash over the price of the iPhone 5C.

He also suggested that Apple statements about not wanting to produce a huge amount of smartphone models had previously been misconstrued.

“I don’t view that as being satisfied with being small or however you want to define it. I just want to say that the macro thing for us is making a great product and we must do that. If we can’t do that, we’re not going to force ourselves to hit a price point that makes us produce a product that we’re not proud of because we lose who we are in that. We’re not going to do that.”

You can pretty much expect the new hardware not to include any kind of true budget iPhone from that statement.

New products tipped to be launched by Apple this year include the Apple iWatch, its own Apple smart TV currently nicknamed the iTV, and a unique payment system.

Speaking earlier this week, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak defended the company despite no longer being part of its daily workings.

“The great products really come from secret development. You put small teams of great people on them and they aren’t bothered by other people commenting on what they’re doing while they’re doing it”, explained Wozniak. “A whole new product category doesn’t happen very often. It might happen once a decade. Sometimes you have to wait for one of those to come about.”

We reckon Apple is due a fantastic new product this year then.
