Samsung Galaxy S4 - set to be replaced February 24?

Samsung has sent out invites for an event that should see the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

The Unpacked 5 event, as it’s being called, will take place on February 24 in Barcelona - that’s the time and location of Mobile World Congress, when most of the mobile tech world will be gathered together anyway.

Samsung’s use of the number 5 in the press invites suggests that it will indeed feature the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the company’s next flagship phone. Last month, the company confirmed that the Galaxy S5 would hit shops in March or April, which again points to a late February reveal.

Then there’s the fact that Samsung’s Unpacked events are generally used to launch major devices - and they don’t come more major than the company’s multi-million selling Galaxy S range.

As for what to expect, many are predicting that the Galaxy S5 will see a switch away from Samsung’s typical plastic design to a more premium metal build.

The display is expected to be even sharper than that of the 1080p Samsung Galaxy S4, with a 2,560 x 1,440 '2K' resolution mooted. It could well be a little bigger, too, at 5.25-inches, and some rumours even point to Samsung ditching AMOLED technology for LCD.

One habit Samsung seems unlikely to break is its split approach to processors. Once again, it’s believed that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will run on two different processors depending on the region it’s bought in.

There’ll be Samsung’s own Exynos 6 CPU for some territories, and an off-the-shelf chip for most of the others. Reports suggest that this could be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 805. Both should be backed by 3GB of RAM.

Elsewhere we’re looking at a possible 16-megapixel camera and, as is the post-iPhone 5S trend, a fingerprint sensor. Expect to see Android 4.4 KitKat running the show.

It looks like we have just 20 days to wait and see if any of this is correct.
