The Samsung Galaxy S5 will feature a scratch-resistant diamond metal bodied design, latest reports have suggested ahead of the phone’s upcoming unveiling.
With a Samsung Galaxy S5 release date widely expected to be held during the first quarter of 2014, new leaks out of the manufacturer’s native Korean have claimed that the Samsung Galaxy S4 follow-on will boast a scratch-resistant diamond metal finish.
While the phone will not actually feature sparkly diamond elements, it is believed the handset’s metal chasis will be carbon treated to increase its resilience to scratches and scrapes.
“The external design is highly likely to be changed to a great extent,” Korean outlet ETNews has reported whilst citing insider sources at Samsung. The reports have added: “Samsung Electronics is conducting R&D to apply the diamond metal surface treatment technology to metal cases.
"In a word, a diamond material is coated onto the metal case surface of smartphones. If the metal case is coated with a diamond material, vulnerabilities to scratches and deformation can be redressed.
The treatment process sees the metal body coated in a carbon finish before being exposed to extreme temperatures. This causes the carbon to harden, offering a scratch-resistant finish to the future flagship phone.
Although a new metal body is one of the most widely expected Samsung Galaxy S5 features, it is not a given. Further reports out of Korea have claimed that Samsung is still weighing up the pros and cons of making the move from its beloved, and cheap, plastic.
Recent Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours have suggested that the iPhone 5S rival will make its first formal appearance at MWC 2014 in February.
It has been mooted that the handset will play host to a 2K display, 64bit processor and a new 16-megapixel rear-mounted camera.
