Nintendo has confirmed it is experimenting with some iOS apps, something fans have wanted to see for quite some time.
Although the Nintendo 3DS and the company’s other handheld consoles are selling well, consumers are opting not to buy them because they already own a perfectly adequate mobile gaming device in their phone or tablet.
Critics have often suggested that Nintendo should branch out into iOS apps, which could help the company earn some more money.
It seems this is already a plan for the Japanese gaming giant, as Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said Nintendo is “experimenting” with the iOS mobile platform.
“We recognise that there are a lot of smartphones and tablets out there, and so what we’re doing is we’re being very smart in how we use these devices as marketing tools for our content,” said Fils-Aime during an interview
Before you get too excited, it doesn’t seem Nintendo will be launching full Nintendo games on iOS, but rather marketing tie-ins featuring your favourite Nintendo characters.
“We’re also doing a lot of experimentation of what I would call the little experiences you can have on your smartphone and tablet that will drive you back to your Nintendo hardware. It’s largely going to be much more marketing activity-orientated, but we’ve done little things where there’s some element of gameplay – a movement, a shaking, something like that.”
You might be able to expect a Nintendo themed endless runner or other such content. It doesn’t seem like Nintendo will ever directly port Zelda or Mario games to iOS or Android.
“We believe our games are best played and best enjoyed on our devices and so the full game play will only be on Nintendo devices.”
