Will the Windows Phone store ever be able to compete?
Microsoft has announced that the Windows Phone Store now contains over 200,000 apps within its library.
The software giant revealed the good news about the Windows Phone Store in a Developer Blog, which advises developers to get their apps out or updated before Christmas.
“The current holiday shopping season and all the great promotions are just underway, and we’re already seeing momentum build with the Store surpassing 12 million transactions per day and Windows Phone Store surpassing 200,000 apps,” reads the Windows Blog.
“The best news is that we’re just getting started.”
In late November, Microsoft made a rather bold promise that the Windows Phone Store would rival the iOS and Android app stores by the end of 2014.
However, seeing as it has taken around 18 months for the Windows Phone Store to double its app numbers from 100,000 to 200,000 we doubt it will match Android and iOS by this time next year.
Google Play and the iOS App Store only took six months to make the transition from 100,000 to 200,000 apps and have since both grown rapidly.
In June, Apple announced the iOS App Store had reached the 900,000 app milestone, while in July the Google Play store hit 1 million Android apps.
This would mean the Windows Phone Store will have to increase in size five times over in order to directly compete with Android and iOS within the next 12 months.
Windows Phone has had some luck this year with large name apps finally arriving in the store, including Instagram and Vine.
Microsoft will have to pull something huge out of the bag next year if the Windows Phone Store stands a chance at competing with the big boys.
