Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition
Minecraft is finally coming to PS3 with the game touching down on the PlayStation Network from December 18.
The Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft was released in June, but there was no word when a PS3 version would become available.
Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Mojang’s Owen Hill confirmed the Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be available to download from Wednesday, December 18.
There's no word on pricing as yet, as PSN still lists the release date at "TBC".
It will feature all the content and gameplay available in the other console versions of the game, and Hill says “they’re pretty much identical to play”.
“Minecraft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, you’ll probably build simple structures to protect against nocturnal monsters,” said Hill. “Later on, you might work with your friends to create wonderful, imaginative things. It can also be about adventuring or watching the sun rise over a blocky ocean.”
Hill also said there will be downloadable skins and texture packs available from PSN “soon after release”.
PlayStation exclusive content isn’t on the cards yet, but Hill said it “would be cool” before adding “fingers crossed, eh?”
Mojang is also developing a Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition and Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition, but there are no release dates for either yet. There will be more information available in the New Year.
Unfortunately, there’s no confirmation yet as to whether the Minecraft: PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 Editions will feature Remote Play compatibility with the PS Vita.
Minecraft on the PC has sold over 13 million copies, while the Xbox 360 Edition sales are around 10 million units.
