Boom!

Kickstarter has a new champion. A card game called Exploding Kittens has become the most-backed project ever, attracting over 107,000 supporters.

The title of most-backed has nothing to do with how much money it's raised, as the team behind it point out in a blog post. It's awarded purely on how many backers a project has. But Exploding Kittens could also become the most-funded Kickstarter project ever.

It's raised over $4 million, which isn't far off the $13.3 million raised by the current title-holder, the Coolest Cooler. It has 22 days to break that record. What's even more impressive is that the game only had a funding goal of $10,000.

Exploding Kittens surpassed the game Double Fine Adventure, the film Veronica Mars and the Reading Rainbow to become the most-backed project.

It's described as "A card game for people who are into kittens and explosions. And laser beams. And sometimes goats." The aim is to avoid being blown up by a kitten and its explosive material of choice. You take turns to draw cards – some distract the kittens from their detonation tendencies while others let you pass the buck.
