ZTE turns to eBay in the UK and US to sell Firefox OS handset

ZTE has turned to eBay in the UK and US to sell one of its Firefox OS smartphone, the ZTE Open.

The first Firefox OS smartphone to be officially launched in 2013, the ZTE Open will be exclusively available in orange on eBay in the UK and US.

The ZTE Open will be available to buy unlocked and SIM-free for £59.99 on eBay a month after the general launch.

“It is [a] great honour to launch the ZTE Open Firefox OS phone worldwide through eBay,” said Dai Wenhong, VP of ZTE. “ZTE is devoted to providing more options for customers globally and enabling them to live better lives via advance technology. The ZTE Open offers customers a smartphone experience at an incredible price point, making it ideal for cost conscious consumers or those looking to upgrade to a smartphone for the first time.”

Running the HTML based Firefox OS, the ZTE Open has a 3.5-inch 320 x 480p resolution screen powered by a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Definitely not a powerhouse in terms of specs, the focus of the ZTE Open is the Firefox OS, which works by treating HTML5 apps as native. This means any apps built on the platform will work on any other smartphone platforms like iOS and Android.

“Mozilla is dedicated to moving the web forward as a platform for innovation and building products that people love”, said Li Gong, Mozilla’s Senior VP of Mobile Devices. “We are pleased that now we will put the full power of the web in even more people’s hands. With a great potential user base, we know that even more developers around the world will create their apps with new APIs to stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation.”

Pre-orders for the ZTE Open start on Friday, August 16.
