Samsung will launch its Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch at the IFA conference early next month.
According to “two people familiar with the matter”, Samsung is preparing to launch its first wearable technology device, the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
Speaking to Bloomberg, the sources said the Samsung smartwatch will be powered by Google’s Android mobile OS and be on sale by the end of the year.
The Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch will launch as part of the Samsung Unpacked event on September 4 the IFA press day, two days before the Berlin-based conference actually starts.
Reportedly launching alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 , the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch launch was already tipped for September 4 yesterday by notorious leakster Sammobile.com.
It was also heavily rumoured by SammyHub at the start of the month, so it definitely looks like a Samsung smartwatch launch is on the cards for early September.
This latest leak suggests that the first Samsung smartwatch won’t feature a flexible display, despite earlier tips and a Galaxy Gear patent that suggested otherwise. It seems like Samsung is working on a flexible display version to launch in the future.
With 2014 tipped to be the year of the smartwatch, Samsung will eventually be under pressure from competing companies looking to be big players on the wearable device market.
Sony has already launched the Sony Smartwatch 2, and Apple, Google and Microsoft among others are also reportedly working on their own wrist-worn devices.
Analysts predict that the smartwatch industry will generate $60 billion (£38.4 billion) or more this year alone, but it will be a race to see which manufacturer can lock customers to their platform, especially with the smartwatches synching with tablet, smartphone and potentially Smart TVs too.
Samsung is currently the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer with quite a grip on the market, only vaguely rivalled in sales figures and market share by Apple.
