Plants vs Zombies 2 out now on iOS

PopCap's much-anticipated tower defence sequel, Plants vs Zombies 2, has finally been released - and this time on iOS first.

The first Plants vs Zombies game was released back in May 2009, but initially only on PC and Mac. It took until February 2010 for an iOS version to appear, followed by an Xbox Live Arcade version later that year.

Since then, PopCap's hugely successful game has appeared on pretty much every platform you care to mention.

After a four year wait (and a further month-long delay from its initial release date), we finally have a sequel. Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time, to give the game its full title, is available now for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch as a free download. Unlike the original game, this one is funded by optional in-app purchases.

Plants vs Zombies 2 continues the side-on casual tower defence gameplay of the original, whereby you must defend your house from a shuffling zombie invasion through the strategic placement of various deadly plants.

The twist here is that the action takes place across various exotic locations in a number of time zones. These include ancient Egypt, a creaky pirate ship, and a Wild West setting. Naturally there are plenty of new zombie antagonists, as well as new plant types to cut them down with.

There are also special-use weapons that require direct operation, such as the ability to pinch heads off zombies or simply dismiss them with a casual flick. Naturally, these won't present themselves too often, unless you're willing to splash out some cold hard cash.

This is one of the biggest iOS gaming launches of the year, and it won't cost you a penny, so if you have an iPhone or an iPad we'd recommend giving it a spin as soon as (in)humanly possible.
