Twitter has started sending out prompts to its most influential users, encouraging them to ditch Instagram as a means of sharing photos.
On Thursday, the social network began sending out prompts to its high profile users encouraging them to "Post your photos directly on Twitter to make sure your fans always see them."
This is a reference to the way in which Instagram only permits its images to be shared on Twitter as links to the source.
According to Mashable, these prompts (pictured) were sent out to "a group of notable users in media, entertainment, sports and other categories."
The two social network services have been in particularly hot competition just recently, with Instagram boasting of having overtaken Twitter in terms of user numbers just last month.
Instagram's monthly userbase now numbers over 300 million, while Twitter sits at 284 million.
This prompted Twitter co-founder Ev Williams to hit back somewhat aggressively, claiming that user numbers were not the most important thing.

"If you think about the impact Twitter has on the world versus Instagram, it’s pretty significant," he told Fortune. "Twitter is what we wanted it to be. It’s this realtime information network where everything in the world that happens on Twitter—important stuff breaks on Twitter and world leaders have conversations on Twitter.
"If that’s happening, I frankly don’t give a shit if Instagram has more people looking at pretty pictures."
Of course, this latest move to steer people towards sharing images on Twitter suggests that the company as whole DOES care where people are getting their pretty picture fix.
