Nintendo has revealed that it is to close its Club Nintendo loyalty program later this year.
The Kyoto company has been running its rewards scheme since 2002, when it was known as Nintendo VIP 24:7. Now it has announced that it will be discontinuing the Club Nintendo program in three stages.
From April 1, Nintendo will stop including product registration cards with its physical games. These cards used to add points to your Club Nintendo account, allowing you to redeem them against various Nintendo goods.
Then, on April 20, Nintendo will halt the ability to register games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. Surveys for such downloaded titles will also no longer be available.
Finally, on September 30, Club Nintendo programme will close for good. This means that you'll neither be able to sign up as a new member nor log in as an existing member. There'll be no more stars to earn, and you won't be able to redeem existing stars again items from the Stars Catalogue.

Those disappointed by this news should draw some heart from the fact that Nintendo will be launching a replacement service at some point later this year. What's more, those who sign up to this new service during the launch period will be able to download Flipnote Studio 3D for the Nintendo 3DS system for free.
Before then, though, do remember to redeem any remaining stars on your Club Nintendo account. Those Pikmin keyrings won't be available after September 30.
