Flipboard 3.0 lands as personalised, smartphone-centric update

Flipboard, the app-based news and article aggregator, has been updated, as Flipboard 3.0 introduces a more personalised user experience.

A smartphone-centric update, the third-generation Flipboard release features a newly refined user interface and home section which can be easily customised to show personally tailored content.

Integrating algorithms acquired in Flipboard’s recent takeover of rival service Zite, the app’s personalisation features have been dramatically improved.

The new Flipboard will now merge hand-picked stories with articles, images, and multimedia content pulled from your topics of interest.

Flipboard is your personal magazine, and now it’s even easier to make it yours,” Flipboard co-founder Evan Doll said in unveiling the update. “By following your interests, you’ll see tailored highlights and recommendations every time you visit Flipboard.”

He added: “You’ll discover new perspectives from over 10 million magazines created by our readers. And the new streamlined phone interface is even faster and simpler to use.”

With Flipboard serving a staggering 8 billion article flips every month, the service is adding 250,000 new users every day. Helping the new app reach as many users as possible, the third-generation service will roll out to iOS and Android users today.

There is currently no word on a Windows-based update.

Although the update will land for both iPhone and iPad users, with 70 per cent of Flipboard users now accessing the service via smartphone, the update has been geared largely towards mobile users - including the many Android screen-sizes in use.

Further aiding personalisation improvements, the new Flipboard also adds ‘Daily Edition’ magazines for a selection of territories – including a UK specific one.

These Daily Editions are quick-hit magazines which offer instant access to the top stories from leading article categories such as news, sports, technology and entertainment.

Landing at 7am local time daily, these new editions add breaking news throughout the day.
