Samsung's long-rumoured VR headset has been snapped, and its launch date tipped for next month.

We've been receiving little bits of information on the so-called Samsung Gear VR, or Project Moonlight as it's been codenamed, for some time now.

We've learned that the Oculus Rift VR-like headset will allow you to slot in an existing Samsung smartphone for an immersive virtual reality experience.

Now The Verge has supplied some extra details. Apparently the Samsung VR headset will be revealed alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 at its launch on September 3.

This suggests that the new phablet will be compatible with the VR headset. It's also fitting given the recent news that early developer models of the Oculus VR are being supplied with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 front panels.

Oculus itself is said to have worked on Samsung's VR project in some capacity.

The website has also supplied this photo of the Samsung VR headset. It speculates that the device could have a focus ring as well as a Micro USB connector, much like an Android phone. We also see a simple lid construction that apparently clips on over the smartphone once inserted.

It seems the phone pictured alongside the VR headset is a Samsung Galaxy S5, suggesting that Samsung's latest flagship phone will be compatible alongside the larger Galaxy Note 4.

We'll know more when Samsung's pre-IFA Unpacked event kicks off in exactly three weeks time.
